Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the hole required.

    • 2

Place pieces of masking tape on the area of the Formica to be cut, and transfer the measurements on top of the tape. Laminate is easily chipped by the power tool's vibrations. The masking tape helps protect the surface.

    • 3

Place a piece of masking tape on the shoe of the jigsaw for extra protection.

    • 4

Set the jigsaw blade for at least 1/8th inch longer than the depth of the table.

    • 5

Put on eye protection. Turn on the jigsaw so that it will be at full speed when you begin your cut. Holding the jigsaw firmly, cut straight down into the laminate.

    • 6

Sand the edges of the hole with 220-grit sandpaper, if desired. Since the hole will be covered by a grommet, this step is not essential.

Tips & Warnings

  • For best results, Formica should be cut from the unfinished side. However, it can be cut from the finished side without damaging the material by using a sharp blade and steady hand.

  • If you are inexperienced with using a jigsaw, practice on a scrap piece of material if possible.
