Cowl scarves are stylish and functional, especially in chilly weather.

The draped neckline of a cowl scarf is a timeless look. Some sweaters are made with cowl necklines, but you can give any top the fashionable look of a cowl by draping a crocheted wrapping cowl scarf over your neck and shoulders. If you crochet, these stylish scarves are rather easy to craft. In just a few hours, you will have a soft and cozy cowl with which you can wrap yourself or accessorize your clothes.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 72 stitches with the crochet hook and yarn. Join the end to the first chain with a slip stitch to create a circle.

    • 2

Chain 3 and double crochet in each stitch for the entire row. Join to the beginning of the row with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. There should still be 72 double crochets, or stitches, at the end of this row.

    • 3

Chain 3 and double crochet for the entire row. Join the end of the row to the beginning of the row with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain. Continue crocheting rows in this manner until the scarf measures 12 inches wide.

    • 4

Clip the yarn with the scissors and leave a 4-inch tail. Pull the tail through your last stitch to knot it off.

    • 5

Thread the tail of yarn onto the tapestry needle and weave it into the scarf to hide it. Trim away the very end of the yarn with the scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • This pattern is great for chunky weight yarns. Experiment with yarns heavier than a 6 weight for different looks; remember to increase the crochet hook size to handle bigger yarn. This pattern can be made longer or shorter depending on the look you want. Adjust the number of stitches you chain at the beginning, keeping them in multiples of 6. Buttons, beads or other embellishments can be sewn onto your cowl scarf if you want to dress the scarf up.
