How to Sew Strings to an Apron

Add a contrasting band to the front of your apron as well as strings.

Aprons are protective garments that help you keep your clothes from stains while you are working in the kitchen. Aprons come in many shapes and sizes, and not all aprons come with apron strings, which are cords that are attached to the apron at the waist and which then can be tied behind the back, holding the apron more closely to the body. Make your own apron strings out of a matching grosgrain ribbon that is then sewn across the front of the apron for a contrasting look.

Things You'll Need

• 2-inch grosgrain ribbon
• Scissors
• Chalk
• Pins
• Needle
• Matching thread
• Sewing machine (optional)

Instructions

1. Cut a length of 2-inch grosgrain ribbon that is double the measurement of your waist.

2. Put on the apron and determine where you want the strings to wrap around your body. Apron strings can sit at the natural waist or above or below it.

3. Mark the center of the apron at the level where you want the strings to rest with chalk.

4. Mark the middle of the grosgrain ribbon lightly with chalk.

5. Remove the apron.

6. Pin the middle of the grosgrain ribbon to the mark you made in chalk on the apron with a pin.

7. Pin the ribbon flat across the apron. Leave the ends of the ribbon protruding from either side of the apron.

8. Sew the ribbon to the apron by running two seams as close as you can to the edges of the ribbon using needle and thread. You can also use a sewing machine for this purpose. At this point, the apron is ready to be worn.

Tips & Warnings

• Singe the apron ends or spray them with an anti-fray spray to stop them from unraveling.
