How to Crochet a Simple Headband
Many people, both young and adult, have uses for headbands. Headbands are easy and fun projects that can be completed in an hour or two. Even beginner crocheters can make headbands because only the very basic crochet stitches, for example single crochet, are needed to form simple headbands. Use up scrap yarn you have lying around by crocheting a simple, functional headband.
Things You'll Need
- Flexible measuring tape
- Scrap yarn
- Crochet hook (size appropriate for the yarn weight)
- Scissors
- Sewing needle (optional)
- Sewing thread (optional)

1
Hold the beginning end of the measuring tape at the middle of the top of your head.

2
Wrap the measuring tape around your head once, as if the measuring tape were a headband.
-
-
3
Note the measurement.
-
4
Make a slipknot in the yarn with a tail of 6 inches. Tighten the slipknot on the crochet hook.
-
5
Crochet the chain stitch until the chain matches the measurement you took of your head.
-
6
Single crochet in each chain, starting in the second chain from the crochet hook. Turn.
-
7
Single crochet in each stitch in the chain.
-
8
Pull up a loop of the working yarn and cut the yarn with scissors, leaving 6 inches. Pull the tail of yarn to tighten the last stitch into a knot.
-
9
Put the headband on your head, with the two yarn tails at the base of your head near your neck. Tie the yarn tails in a bow.

Tips & Warnings
Leave the yarn tails longer or shorter for a different bow look.
Sew seed beads onto the headband for sparkle with a sewing needle and thread.
The ends of the yarn tails will fray if not handled with care. To prevent fraying, dab a tiny bit of glue onto the ends of the yarn tails and roll each yarn end between your fingers.
Be careful how tightly you tie the headband on your head. Some yarns, such as cotton and alpaca, will stretch out, while wool will retain its shape.
