How to Detangle a Fake Wig

How to Detangle a Fake Wig thumbnail
Always comb out tangles while the wig is on a wig form.

Synthetic or fake wigs tangle just as easily as human hair wigs. Improper storage, overly drying hair products and windy days are all reasons that the hair would tangle. Despite being made of a synthetic polymer, fake wigs are just as prone to breakage during detangling. In fact, synthetic hair has a tendency to stretch before breakage, so detangling a synthetic wig requires greater finesse than a human hair wig to avoid creating visibly elongated sections of hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pin the wig to a wig form with 10 to 20 pins placed around the perimeter of the wig and along the scalp from front to back. The wig must fit securely to the wig form, allowing you to work with the hair without pulling the wig off.

    • 2

Spray the tangled wig with water.

    • 3

Coat the tangles in a conditioner formulated for synthetic wigs and allow it to sit for three to five minutes. Because the hair is synthetic, this time is more for the conditioner to penetrate the knots in the hair than the hair itself.

    • 4

Start at the very end of the hair and work upward with a wide-toothed comb. Comb out a 1-inch section of hair at a time. Pinch the hair just above where you are combing to avoid pulling the hair from the wig.

    • 5

Press the tooth of the comb into the tangle to pick out any difficult knots or use your fingertips to pull apart the hair gently. Do not comb from above the tangle and try to yank the tangle out.

    • 6

Wash the wig by swirling it in soapy water and rinsing it in the same manner in fresh water. Scrubbing the wig with your fingers will create more tangles.

    • 7

Comb the wig while still wet using the wide-toothed comb and working from tip to scalp to remove any new tangles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Protect your wig with leave-in conditioner if it is prone to tangling.
