Use leftover wine corks to make a cork ball.

If you hate to throw away your wine corks when the bottles are empty, save them and make a wine cork ball. Hang wine cork balls over tables, in foyers or in corners for decorations. Cork balls have a retro 1970s look about them, and they make interesting additions to home or wedding decor. If you have a large number of leftover corks, make a very large cork ball or a slew of little ones to group together.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic foam ball
  • Pencil or long drill bit
  • Bamboo skewer
  • Toothpick
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon or twine
  • Hot glue gun
  • Newspaper
  • Corks

Instructions

    • 1

Bore a hole all the way through the center of the foam ball. Twist a sharpened pencil as you push it through the foam, or work a long drill bit -- without the drill -- through the ball.

    • 2

Poke the end of your ribbon or twine with the pointy edge of a bamboo skewer, and use the skewer to push the ribbon or twine all the way through the foam ball. When the ribbon or twine comes out the other end of the ball, pull it several inches. Fold the ribbon or twine over a toothpick, then push the ribbon or twine end back up through the foam ball. After the ribbon or twine emerges again at the top of the ball, even out the ends and trim them with scissors. Tie the ends in a bow, if you wish.

    • 3

Plug in your hot glue gun, and set it on newspaper. While it's warming up, assemble your corks.

    • 4

Put a dab of hot glue on one end of each cork. Attach the glued end to the foam ball. Hold it in place for a few seconds until the cork sets. Repeat this step until the foam ball is covered in corks.

    • 5

Hang the cork ball from the ceiling, over your dining room table or on a Christmas tree. Make additional cork balls from different sizes of foam balls to complement your first cork ball.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you hold the ball over the trash can while you drill through the ball, your cleanup will be much easier.

  • Stain the corks for a richer color.

  • Use ribbons in festive colors for special occasions such as weddings, parties and holidays.

  • Don't touch the hot glue with your fingers.
