Instructions

    • 1

Get a trim. Hair can be weighed down by itself and losing even an inch or two can add extra bounce. The more you remove, the thicker your hair will appear.

    • 2

Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo and make sure you focus particularly on the scalp, where oil can accumulate and weigh your hair down.

    • 3

Skip the conditioner when you shower. Conditioner fills in the cracks in the hair shaft, making it smooth and shiny. It also can weigh your hair down, removing volume. Leaving out the conditioner keeps the cuticles rougher, so the strands don't lay as flat against each other. If you need a detangler, spray a light leave-in conditioner on your damp hair and comb it through with your fingers.

    • 4

Comb a hair thickening cream through your damp hair. Make sure you get a product that is weightless so you don't cause build-up.

    • 5

Flip your hair upside down while you are blow drying it. This will cause lift at the roots and make your hair appear full. When your hair is 75% dry, flip your head right side up and use the cool setting on your blow dryer to finish. This will seal down the top layer of your hair and make it shiny, not frizzy.

    • 6

Large, heated rollers can give extra body and lift to your hair. Make sure the rollers you are using are large enough to only wrap each strand once or twice. You are looking for body, not corkscrew curls.

    • 7

Lift sections of hair at the crown of your head and firmly brush the hair back toward the scalp with a fine tooth comb. Gently smooth the top layer of hair over the teased section underneath. Repeat anywhere you would like extra volume.
