How to Make Felt Pine Cones
Pine cones are common decorative items during fall and the holidays. However, pine cones can be prickly and messy if they should crumble. Pine cones also pose the risk of carrying bugs into your home when collected outdoors. Fortunately, you can make your own faux pine cones using craft felt. Felt pine cones are soft, decorative and never messy. They are also versatile, as you can create felt pine cones of varying sizes. Use felt pine cones for Christmas tree ornaments, placed in a bowl as a table centerpiece or hung from the sides of stockings as decorations.

1
Cut the craft felt into strips approximately 1 inch wide. You don’t need to measure, but try to make the strips as even as you can. These felt strips will form the ridges of the pine cone.
-
2
Use your scissors to cut scallops on one edge of each piece of felt stripping. Next, make a small cut in between each scallop. However, do not cut all the way through the fabric. You still want the felt strip to remain intact.

3
Push a small eye hook into the large end of a 3-inch-tall foam egg. The eye hook gives you something to grasp as you construct a felt pine cone. It can later be threaded with a ribbon so that you can hang the felt pine cone.
-
4
Take one of the scalloped felt strips and begin rolling it up until it is about half an inch thick. There should be some fabric left over that is not rolled into the strip. Do not cut off this fabric. Place a dot of hot glue at the base of the felt ball where it meets the strip so that it loosely holds together.
-
5
Place a generous amount of hot glue on the small end of the foam egg. Press the rolled-up piece of felt down onto the tip of the foam egg. You will notice that the middle of the felt ball begins to jut out a little bit. This will create the tip of the pine cone.
-
6
Take the loose piece of hanging felt and start wrapping it around the egg, allowing the scalloped edges that you cut into the felt to remain exposed. Place small dabs of hot glue under the felt to hold it in place as you wrap the egg.
-
7
Start with another piece of felt to cover the bare parts of the egg. Wrap the foam egg in felt until you get to the bottom. You may have to cut out some individual scalloped edges of felt to cover the egg around the bottom.
-
8
Cut a 1-inch felt circle. Using your scissors, create a hole in the center of the felt large enough for the eye hook to fit through. Place a generous amount of hot glue on the large end of the egg and cover it with the felt circle.

Tips & Warnings
Thread a piece of colorful ribbon through the eye hook to hang your felt pine cone. Don’t be afraid to get creative. While pine cones are typically brown, you can make felt pine cones using virtually any color of felt.
Always be careful when using a hot glue gun. Making felt pine cones requires fine work with your fingers. Be cautious not to burn your fingers as your wrap the foam egg in felt and secure it with hot glue.
