How to Lacquer a Saxophone

Refinish your saxophone with brass lacquer.

One of the saxophone's most distinguishing features, aside from its easily discernible sound, is the shiny brass finish. Over time a saxophone's lacquer finish tends to fade and become dull-looking. This not only makes the horn less attractive, but can also significantly lower the saxophone's resale value. Fortunately, it is possible to refinish your treasured saxophone without much previous brass refinishing experience. This involves stripping the old lacquer finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the appropriate safety equipment. This includes a pair of chemical-resistant rubber gloves, eye protection and a dust mask if you are working indoors. Prepare your workspace by laying out some dropcloths or newspaper.

    • 2

Pour a generous amount of acetone nail varnish on to a dry washcloth. Wipe the varnish on to the entire surface of the saxophone. Allow the varnish to soak according to the label's instructions. Wipe off all excess finish from the saxophone with a dry cloth.

    • 3

Dip another washcloth into some degreaser. Rub the degreasing agent on the saxophone's entire surface. Be as thorough as possible. This will remove all dust and grime.

    • 4

Place the saxophone on a dropcloth. Apply some brass polish to another dry cloth. Rub the polish on to the saxophone's surface. Avoid using other types of metal polish. Be sure to use polish specific to brass surfaces.

    • 5

Lay the saxophone on its side so one side of the instrument is facing upward. Spray the visible surface of the saxophone with brass lacquer until the entire surface is covered. Let the coat dry according to the lacquer spray can's label. Flip the saxophone over and apply a spray coat to the other side.
