How to Show Appreciation to Good Neighbors

How to Show Appreciation to Good Neighbors thumbnail
Neighbors can become close friends and help each other in times of need.

Some neighbors are always there and willing to help whenever you need them. Many neighbors are often being friendly in passing, waving when they see each other outside or bringing a welcome gift when someone moves into the neighborhood. However, in addition to these typical acts of kindness and recognition, some neighbors can be counted on to water your plants, cut your grass and bring in your mail while you are on vacation. They also may watch your children for you when you can't find someone else. When your neighbor goes out of his way to help you out, you can show your appreciation.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a letter to your neighbor to let her know what her friendship means to you and how much you appreciate what she has done for you.

    • 2

Offer to return the favor the next time your neighbor needs help herself. If you see something that needs doing at her home, reach out and do it. However, if you feel your neighbor may not appreciate the action, ask first.

    • 3

Make a simple gift if you are talented with a specific craft or even cooking. Make a small trinket of your appreciation, such as painting a picture, making a meal or cookies, or sewing a blanket.

    • 4

Give a small gift that you have purchased specifically for your neighbor, such as his favorite candy, a small statue for his garden or a special treat for his dog. The gift doesn't have to be something big. As long as it is personalized, it tells him that you are thinking about him.

    • 5

Invite your neighbor to your home for dinner or another special gathering, such as drinks and a movie. Showing your neighbor hospitality shows her that you appreciate what she has done for you.

    • 6

Express an interest in his life and his activities. For instance, if your neighbor enjoys golf, treat him to a round. Or if he enjoys attending events for a local sports team, spring for tickets or offer to take him.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always thank your neighbor verbally in addition to showing her appreciation in other ways. A simple thank you is often all your neighbor needs; however, it is always nice to do something more.
