How to Grease Hair Back

How to Grease Hair Back thumbnail
Greased-back hair can express rebellion and individualism.

With white T-shirts, folded up blue jeans and ragged leather jackets, 1950s teenaged greasers strutted their stuff in gangs and represented the disillusion of youth. The most noticeable part of the greaser look, however, was the slicked-back hairstyle that was an identification with a specific type of "cool." Though greased-back hair is not as common today, people interested in this throwback hairstyle will need ample amounts of wax or pomade to perfect the slick look. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wash, then dry your hair, leaving it slightly damp.

    • 2

Scoop out a small glob of pomade, cream or wax and rub it in both hands to warm it up and make it easier to spread through your hair.

    • 3

Spread the hair product from front to back through your hair, mimicking the action of a comb.

    • 4

Comb your hair straight back, starting in the middle then moving to the sides.

    • 5

Put another generous amount of hair product onto your hands and coat your hair, moving in the same direction that you just combed.

    • 6

Comb your hair straight back again and allow the style to set. Your hair will dry in a slicked-back style and have that wet look that is the hallmark of greased-back hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry pomade/cream/wax with you to retouch your hair during the day so you can maintain your greased look.

  • For added style, add extra hair product to the front of your hair and comb it upward so it stands up in what is known as a pompadour.

  • Greasy products not made specifically for hair, such as cooking oil, are very difficult to wash out and can damage your hair.
