How to Make Ribbed Scarves
A scarf is often one of the first projects taken on by individuals who are new to knitting. Scarves are simple to make and work up quickly, making them ideal not only for beginners but also for seasoned knitters who are looking for a relaxing project. Add interest to your basic scarf by introducing patterns, such as ribbing.

Cast on a multiple of four stitches. The exact number will depend on whether you would like to make a skinny scarf or a wider one.
-
2
Work the first row by knitting straight across.

3
Begin the ribbing pattern in the second row. To create 2 by 2 ribbing, knit two stitches and then purl two stitches. Repeat this across the entire row.
-

Continue working the knit two, purl two pattern until the scarf reaches your desired length. Knit straight across the final row, then cast off.

Tips & Warnings
The size of your knitting needles will help determine whether your ribbing is loose or tight. Larger needles will produce looser stitches while smaller needles will make tighter ones.
To make an extra cozy, chunky scarf, consider working with two strands of yarn held together.
