How to Apprentice for Hairdressing

How to Apprentice for Hairdressing thumbnail
Hair dressing apprenticeships vary in length, some lasting for several years.

Hairdressing apprenticeships are kind of like internships; they provide aspiring hairdressers with experience and on-the-job training. Apprentices typically work directly with clientele, but are overseen by a master stylist. Most apprenticeships are paid, allowing workers to earn money as they train and gain qualifications. Some salon employers require that stylists have apprenticeship experience, so an apprentice position is required to develop professionally.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll at least part-time in an accredited college or institute to study hair and cosmetology to qualify for an apprenticeship. Take general coursework to gain a basic knowledge of the skills and techniques of the trade. Also, take practical courses which allow for hands-on training.

    • 2

Develop a portfolio. Take pictures of clients or models that you style in school and training. Feature photographs of your best work in a portfolio.

    • 3

Volunteer at a salon to gain experience in the salon environment. Apprentices fulfill a variety of administrative duties, besides cutting and styling. Gain experience booking appointments, greeting clients, mixing hair color and shampooing and conditioning clients’ hair to show prospective employers that you are qualified for the apprenticeship.

    • 4

Send your resume and portfolio to salons that offer apprenticeships. Maximize your chances of obtaining an offer by submitting your application materials to a range of salons from traditional to highly stylish and expensive.

    • 5

Interview for the position, upon request. Discuss your qualifications, including your education and work experience, and your career goals. Showcase your communication and personal skills, as well as your technical skills, to convince the prospective employer that you would be an asset to the work team.
