Tie-dye gives you instant hippie cred.

If you are searching for a no-fuss way to dress like a hippie, tie-dye will help you make quick work of achieving your goal. The Hippie Era of the 1960s embraced psychedelic drugs that induced mind-expanding trips. Tie-dye became popular in this era, as the swirling colors and free flowing patterns mirrored the strange things people saw while "tripping" on LSD or other psychedelics. You can find plenty of affordable tie-dye clothing articles at local thrift stores, or make your own tie-dye designs at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Tie-dye shirt
  • Tattered jeans (or long patchwork skirt)
  • Flip flops
  • Tie-dye bandana
  • Flowers (real or fake)

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your jeans, tie-dye shirt and flip flops. Fold your tie-dye bandana into a triangle, and then fold up from the bottom multiple times until you have a long rectangle.

    • 2

Place the folded tie-dye bandana around your head, so that the bottom edge rests just above your eyebrows. Tie off the bandana in the back of your head. Stick a few flowers into the side of your bandana, by your ears.

    • 3

Put on multiple hemp necklaces and bracelets, one of which should have a peace sign attached to it. Slide on your sunglasses, and slip on your leather vest.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to add authenticity to your hippie persona, buy some patchouli oil and dab a bit behind your ears. You will smell like you just stepped off Haight Street, which is a good thing if you are impersonating a hippie.

  • If you can find a leather vest with fringe, you get extra hippie cool points.

  • If you dress like a hippie on a day other than Halloween, get ready for police profiling. You had better be able to prove that you are not in possession of narcotics!
