Thread prefixes are typically used within forums as a way to allow users to perform searches faster and more accurately. The main purpose of prefixes is to help sort through unnecessary topics and users can find the threads that interest them by prefix category. Thread prefixes within posts are simple to create. When you create a new thread in a forum, but find later that you want to change your prefix because it does not fit your desired thread, it can be easily done. Editing a thread prefix is just as easy as creating the actual thread. There are times when a prefix is chosen but soon after, you realize it does not fit your topic. Depending upon which forum you are using, changing it can be seamless.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the forum where you have created your thread and click on the link to go to the first post.

    • 2

Click on the "edit" button. Usually this is located in the upper right hand corner of your thread.

    • 3

Click on the "advanced" button within the edit screen. Again, depending upon the forum, the wording may be different but what you want to do is go into the advanced features of the edit option to allow you to edit a thread prefix.

    • 4

Edit the thread prefix in the advance screen by using the drop-down menu that contains a list of prefixes. Choose the appropriate thread prefix to match your post. Once you have performed your edit to your thread prefix, click on the "Save" button located within the screen to save your changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Typically, you can only choose one thread prefix so make sure you choose the correct one for your topic. If not, you can edit a thread prefix by following the steps above. Figure out what your thread is actually about. The topic of your message or question will help you decide why your previous prefix didn't work and help narrow down the correct prefix.

  • Make sure that the administrator of the forum you are using has enabled prefixes. If thread prefixes are not enabled you will not be able to add them.

  • Do not add thread prefixes to spam. Most of the time you will be blocked or banned from the site.
