1
Plan your intended outcome. Take time to view organized garage layouts online or of those belonging to friends and acquaintances. Get a rough idea of what you want to store in your garage and how you want to distribute the contents so that you know which tools and storage supplies you'll need.
-
2
Obtain the storage supplies that you don't already have. Incorporate shelves, hooks, peg boards and storage tubs into your organizational plans.

3
Choose a day when you have no other plans, and empty the contents of your garage on to your driveway. Allow sufficient time for this step so that you aren't forced to leave your garage contents out overnight, unprotected from weather or theft. Take advantage of the fact that your garage is now empty to clean it. Install the shelving, peg boards and hooks.
-
4
Sort the contents of your garage into four categories: keep, donate, recycle and discard. Return the "keep" items to their newly designated areas within the garage. Arrange for pick up of donated items, and discard and recycle all the others items.

5
Consider purchasing or building a shed. If your possessions interfere with the functionality of your garage, consider storing them elsewhere. If your garage is a single-car garage and you have no other storage in your house, it may be time to create a new storage location in the back yard in the form of a stand-alone structure. Shed kits are available at hardware stores.
