How to Crochet a Dragonfly
Adding a crocheted appliqué to your project is the perfect way to finish it off. Instead of ironing or sewing on a patch or charm, stay within the medium and create a crocheted motif. Crochet a beautiful dragonfly and attach it to your hat, scarf or jacket or even use it for a refrigerator magnet. Use different-colored yarn for the wings and body to create a coordinated color scheme or bright, contrasting dragonfly to make a beautiful embellishment.

Crocheting the Dragonfly Body
-
1
Tie a slip knot around the end of the colored yarn and pull to the end of the strand. Pull it tight, leaving a small loop in the knot. Push the crochet hook through the loop. Chain three and make a slip stitch, joining the beginning and end, to form a circle.
-
2
Chain one to begin the first round. Crochet six half double crochets into the center of the circle. Make a slip stitch to join the last half double crochet to the top of the first half double crochet. Chain one and turn the circle to continue crocheting in the opposite direction.
-
-
3
Complete the second round by creating a half double crochet in each half double crochet from the first round. Join the last half double crochet to the first half double crochet in the second round by forming a slip stitch. Chain one and turn to begin the next round.
-
4
Continue adding rows of half double crochets to the body of the dragonfly. Repeat the process for the second row seven times to create a total of nine rounds. Every stitch in each of the nine rounds will consist of half double crochets.
-
5
Decrease the first two stitches in the 10th row by joining them together. Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the first stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop back through the stitch, creating a third loop on the hook. Yarn over again and insert the crochet hook into the second stitch. Yarn over and pull the loop through the stitch, creating a fifth loop. Yarn over and draw the yarn through all five loops. This decreases one stitch in the row.
-
6
Continue working along the 10th row decreasing all the stitches. The first and second stitches are already joined. Join the third and fourth stitches and the fifth and sixth stitches. This decreases the number of stitches in the 10th row from six to three. Create a slip stitch to join to the beginning and tie off the yarn. Cut a short tail and weave it into the stitches.
Crocheting the Dragonfly Wings
-
7
Create a loose slip knot with the white yarn and loop it onto the crochet hook. Chain three and create one half double crochet in the third chain from the hook. Chain one and turn to begin the first row.
-
8
Crochet two half double crochets in the only half double crochet. Chain one and turn.
-
9
Increase the number of stitches by crocheting two half double crochets in each of the two half double crochets from the second row. Chain one and turn.
-
10
Crochet one half double crochet in each of the four half double crochets in the previous row. Chain one and turn. Repeat this step for the fifth and final row. Tie off the yarn and cut the end, leaving a short tail. Weave the tail into the stitches to complete one dragonfly wing.
-
11
Continue crocheting three additional wings by following the method used for the first wing. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to create a total of four wings.
Constructing the Dragonfly
-
12
Match up the pointed ends of two wings so they slightly overlap each other. These two wings will be used as the pair of top wings. Sew the pointed ends together with a few stitches of white thread. Tie off and cut the thread.
-
13
Align and sew the last two wings together using the same method for the top pair of wings. The last two wings will be used as the bottom set of wings.
-
14
Turn the body of the dragonfly face-down. Line up the top pair of wings just above the middle of the body. Sew the wings to the body with the needle and thread. Only sew into the back stitches of the body so the thread is not visible from the front of the dragonfly. Tie off and cut the thread.
-
15
Attach the bottom pair of wings just below the top pair. Sew the wings onto the body using the same method as the top pair. Tie off and cut the thread.
