How to Restrict an Apple TV Playlist

By connecting an Apple TV to your television, you can watch HD movies, television shows, sporting events, YouTube videos and Netflix videos with a click of a remote. However, in certain circumstances, like having young children at home or your older relatives visiting, you may wish to restrict who can access the videos in your Apple TV Playlists. You can restrict Apple TV playlists by setting up parental controls.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "General" option in the Settings menu. The Settings menu is located on the far-right side of your TV screen.

    • 2

Scroll down and click on the "Parental Controls" option.

    • 3

Click on "Turn On Parental Controls." Apple TV displays the Set Passcode screen.

    • 4

Enter a four-digit passcode, then click the "Done" button. Apple TV displays the "Confirm Passcode" screen.

    • 5

Re-enter your four-digit passcode and click the "Done" button.

    • 6

Click "OK" on the Passcode Confirmed screen. Apple TV displays the "Parental Controls" screen and lists all Apple TV content types. Examples of content types include Photos, Podcasts, Netflix, YouTube, Movies and Television Shows.

    • 7

Scroll through the list and restrict each type of content. You can specify that users enter a password before viewing the type of content, always show the content without a password or hide all content of that type from view.

    • 8

Scroll to the bottom of list and restrict content by ratings and age. You can specify that only movies that are rated PG and lower can be viewed, restrict TV shows by ratings and restrict the listening of explicit music and podcasts.

    • 9

Finish setting up your parental controls and click the menu button on your Apple TV remote to exit Parental Controls.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you watch content on Apple TV through iTunes on your computer, you can also set up Parental Controls in iTunes. The iTunes control settings will carry over to Apple TV. To restrict content in iTunes, choose "Preferences" from the "iTunes" menu, then click the "Parental" icon on the top of the Preferences window. Note that this only restricts shared iTunes content on your computer. It does not affect other Apple TV content, such as movies or television shows you rent or buy on Apple TV.
