How to Make a Tent Out of a Blanket and Chairs

Making a homemade tent in your living room out of blankets and chairs is the quintessential rainy or snow day activity. Kids can let their imaginations run wild as they pretend to be in a cave, castle or clubhouse. A blanket tent can keep the kids busy for quite a while as they play cards, board games, read or watch a movie. All you need is a large blanket and a few chairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a blanket that is suitable to use as a tent. A queen- or king-sized blanket works best; however, two smaller blankets can be tied together to make a blanket that is big enough. Choose a blanket that is made of a durable fabric so that it sustains the wear and tear of being used as a tent.

    • 2

Use four chairs that have long backs. Position the chairs so that the backs are facing each other, either in a square or rectangle. The placement of the chairs will determine the size of the tent; place them farther apart for a large tent, or close together for a small tent.

    • 3

Drape the blanket over the back of the chairs so that the space inside the chairs — or the main area of the "fort" — is covered by the center of the blanket.

    • 4

Secure the blanket under the feet of the chairs if the blanket is large enough. If not, secure the blanket to the seat of the chairs using heavy books, or similar heavy objects that won't pose any hazards to the kids.

    • 5

Leave room for a door between two of the chairs so that your kids can easily crawl in and out of the tent.

    • 6

Place a bunch of pillows and smaller blankets inside the tent for your kids to sit and lounge on.
