Restore rusty and grimy fixtures with CLR.

Rust can affect virtually any metal surface in your home, including faucets, fixtures and appliances. Moisture, salt and acid react with the iron in metal to cause rust. If the rust is left alone, the metal will eventually corrode and crumble. CLR -- a calcium, lime and rust remover -- can dissolve most rust from metal surfaces. After cleaning, keep the metal clean and dry, or apply a rust protector to prevent rust in the future.

Step 2

Mix equal parts CLR and warm water in a small bucket or container. Dampen a cloth or small brush with the solution, and apply it directly to the rusty metal. Allow it to sit no longer than two minutes.

Step 3

Rinse the metal thoroughly with cold water, and inspect for any remaining rust. If rust remains, repeat the cleaning process with full-strength CLR. Rinse the metal immediately after applying.

Step 4

Dry the metal with a clean, soft cloth.
