Step by Step Strategy for Zerg in "Starcraft 2"

Zerg is a substantially different race compared to Terran and Protoss, the other races available in "StarCraft II." Unlike the other races, Zerg is entirely organic, including their production buildings. Units are not created, but are spawned or mutated from pre-existing units such as larva and drones. Generally, Zerg is a reactive race whose strategy changes depending on what's happening in the game. A basic and commonly used Zerg strategy is the Zerg rush, a quick attack intended to end the game early. Because Zerg become weaker as the game progresses, mutalisks can be used to disrupt your opponent at later stages.

Instructions

  1. Early Rush

    • 1

Build more drones as soon as the game starts. Click the larva near the Hatchery (the primary production building), then press the "D" key to mutate the larva into a drone. Click the drones and then right-click the minerals to have the drones gather minerals. Repeat this process until you have eight drones. Click a larva and press the "V" key to produce another overlord, which lets you make more units.

    • 2

Click the overlord, then right-click an area on the map to send the overlord there. To have the overlord go to multiple locations with one command, hold the "Shift" key while clicking the areas where you want the overlord to go. At the start of the game, overlords are primarily used to find your opponent's base.

    • 3

Click a drone, press the "B" key and then click the "Spawning Pool" icon. The Spawning Pool lets you build zerglings. When the Spawning Pool is complete, click the larva and then click the "Zergling" icon. One larva creates two zerglings. Repeat this process until you have six zerglings.

    • 4

Send the zerglings to your opponent's base. Depending on the race and map, you may not have access to the base because most players block off the entrance to their base with units and buildings. If the base is not blocked off, attack enemy worker units while bringing in additional zerglings. If the base is blocked off, attack the weakest units or buildings blocking the entrance until you can get in.

    Mass Mutalisks

    • 5

Click the Hatchery and then click the "Lair" upgrade button.

    • 6

Click a drone, press "V" and then click the "Spire" icon.

    • 7

Click a larva and press "T" to build a mutalisk.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 until you have 20 mutalisks. Use the mutalisks to harass enemy workers and slow down their production. Because mutalisks are fragile, don't engage in a direct fight without ground units such as zerglings.
