How to Make a Toilet Paper Caddy
When faced unexpectedly with an empty roll of toilet paper, having new rolls within easy reach can save you a lot of awkward maneuvering and embarrassment. Make a fabric toilet paper caddy to hang on the wall with extra rolls at the ready. The caddy can be sewn with fabrics that match your bathroom's decor, making it decorative as well as functional. Make one for all the bathrooms in your home, and as a gift for family and friends.
Things You'll Need
- 1/3 yard fabric
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- 1/4-inch-wide ribbon
- Tailor's chalk
- 4 rolls toilet paper
Instructions

-
1
Cut two 6-by-35-inch-long strips of fabric.
-
2
Lay one strip on your work table with the right side facing up. Place the other strip on top with the right side facing down. Pin the short edges on one end together.
-
-
3
Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Open the strip and using an iron, press the seam open.
-
4
Place the long strip on your ironing surface with the wrong side facing up. Fold over 1/4 inch on one long edge and iron. Fold the edge over another 1/4 inch, iron and pin. Sew the pinned edge to hem. Repeat on the other long edge.
-
5
Lay the fabric strip on your work table with the right side facing up. Cut a 6-inch length of 1/4-inch-wide ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half with the cut ends together. Center the cut ends on one short end of the fabric strip. Pin the ribbon ends to the edge of the fabric. The loop lays below the edge on the fabric.
-
6
Fold the fabric strip in half with the right sides together and the short ends matching. Pin the short ends together, sandwiching the ribbon in between. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Your fabric strip is now a ring.
-
7
Turn the ring right side out. The ribbon is the hanger for the toilet paper caddy. Lay the caddy flat with the hanger at the top. Laying flat, the caddy is two layers.
-
8
Measure up 8 inches from the bottom seam. Draw a line across the width of the caddy at this measurement with tailor's chalk. Pin the layers together at the mark. Measure up another 8 inches, mark and pin. Repeat two more times. Sew along the marked lines. This creates four 8-inch sections on the caddy and a 2 1/2-inch section on the top end.
-
9
Insert a roll of toilet paper into each section. Hang the toilet paper caddy in the bathroom where it can be easily accessed.
