DIY Melting Wax for Candle Jar Favors

DIY Melting Wax for Candle Jar Favors thumbnail
Buying candles in jars costs more money than making them yourself.

The best party favors to give are ones that can be used, such as candles in a jar. Unlike votive candles, your guest won't need to find a candle holder before using it. You can buy candles in jars in bulk, but your cheapest option is to make your own at home. Melting your own wax for candle making gives you the opportunity to create a particular scent or color of candle to match your party. For example, if you are hosting a luau, dye candles orange or yellow and use coconut fragrance oil to scent the candles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 inches of water in the bottom pot of a double boiler. Place the pot on the stove and adjust the heat to medium-high.

    • 2

Put soy wax flakes inside the top pot. Set the pot above the pot containing boiling water. Adjust the heat to low-to-medium heat. The steam from the hot water will melt the wax. Stir the melting wax.

    • 3

Shave a block of dye into the melting wax until the wax changes to the desired color.

    • 4

Place a thermometer in the wax. When the temperature reaches 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, stir in 10 percent fragrance oil per one pound of wax to scent the candle wax. The wax is now ready to be poured into a preheated jar that has a pre-tabbed wick in it.
