DIY Accordion Booklet

Memorialize birthday photos in a homemade accordion booklet.

Making your own accordion booklet is a creative way to display your favorite photographs. An accordion booklet opens up in a similar fashion to an accordion instrument. It is constructed with smaller surface dimensions than traditional, binder-like photo albums. Closed pages overlap to hold a multitude of photographs in a compressed manner. The trick to making a successful booklet is to choose paper that is thick enough to serve as backing for an image -- but not excessively thick to prevent bending.

Measure and cut two 3-by-5-inch shipping box cardboard covers.

    • 2

Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup flour into a pot to make a paper mache mix. Boil the mix for three minutes and allow it to cool for five minutes. Pour it into a small bowl.

    • 3

Soak a 1-by-3-inch newspaper strip into the mix. Press the strip onto one of the covers. Continue until both covers are layered in newspaper.

    • 4

Soak a 1-by-3-inch paper towel strip into the mix. Press the strip into one of the covers. Continue until both covers are layered in paper towel. Allow three hours for the covers to dry.

    • 5

Coat each cover with acrylic paint. Allow two hours for the covers to dry.

    • 6

Place a piece of 3-by-25-inch white cardstock onto a table so one of the short ends faces you. Fold the near short end 5 inches up over the cardstock body. Crease the fold. Fold the near short end 5-inches under the cardstock body. Crease the fold. Continue in this manner until the entire cardstock piece is folded in an accordion-like fashion.

    • 7

Squeeze the cardstock pieces together. Bond the top of the cardstock to one of the covers with permanent epoxy. Bond the bottom of the cardstock to the second cover with permanent epoxy. Bond all pictures to each 3-by-5-inch cardstock rectangle with a standard glue stick.
