How to Machine Sew a Long Curtain
Curtains don’t only frame windows; they add elegance and style to a room. They can define the look of a room as well, depending on the length of the curtains. Shorter curtains, either the length of the window sill or just above it, are more casual than floor length curtains. When sewing your own long curtains you should buy the largest bolts of curtain fabric you can so the curtains don’t have unsightly seams. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width and length of the windows you want to dress with handmade curtains. Add an extra foot on to the length measurement. Multiply the width measurement by two so the curtains drape properly and you have room for a seam allowance.
-
2
Lay out your curtain panels. Fold over the side seams of the fabric twice, one-half inch each time, so the raw edge of the fabric is sandwiched inside the folds. Iron the folds flat.
Sew up the side seams with a one-fourth inch seam allowance and a straight stitch. -

3
Fold over the bottom hem of the curtain twice by 2 inches to sandwich the raw edge. Iron that hem flat. Sew the bottom hem with a one-fourth inch seam allowance and a straight stitch.

4
Fold over the top of the long curtain by 4 inches twice to sandwich the raw edge of the fabric and to create a tunnel for the curtain rod. Iron the hem flat.
