How to Clean Highlighter Off Wood

Highlighter stains can happen for various reasons, including a child's overzealous creativity or a simple slip of the hand while writing. Common household cleaners and chemicals are not always safe for use on all types of wood. Basic and inexpensive items can remove highlighter and even permanent marker from wood. These gentle cleaning remedies safely and effectively strip away stains without harsh chemicals that can ruin your furniture or trim.

Step 1

Wet a melamine foam magic eraser and wring out the excess water. Rub the highlighter stain with the magic eraser until it comes off.

Apply a small dab of non-abrasive toothpaste to the highlighter stain. Rub the toothpaste in and let it set for about one minute. Rub the toothpaste into the marker stain with a clean towel. When the highlighter disappears, rinse the area with water and pat dry.

Step 3

Rub the highlighter stain with a pink pencil eraser. This method also works for permanent ink.

Step 4

Cover the highlighter mark with dry-erase marker. Rub the dry-erase marker with a towel to remove it and the highlighter beneath it.
