How to Troubleshoot an HP DV9620US Webcam

The HP Pavilion DV9620US laptop includes a webcam built into the LCD screen that allows you to engage in video chat sessions or record personal videos without connecting any external devices. Because HP introduced the DV9620US a few months before Microsoft released Windows Vista in January 2007, the company shipped the some models of the laptop with Windows XP and a free upgrade certificate for Windows Vista. If you purchased an early model DV9620US and later upgraded to Vista and did not upgrade the driver, the webcam might not work properly in some cases because of firmware issues. In most cases, though, finding and fixing the problem is relatively simple.

Instructions

  1. Update Firmware

    • 1

Navigate to the HP.com website and download the latest firmware driver for the DV9620US webcam. Save the firmware update to a folder on your laptop.

    • 2

Click “Start,” then “Computer.” Open the file in which you saved the webcam firmware update file. Double-click the file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware update for the webcam. Reboot the laptop when prompted.

    • 3

Click “Start,” then “All Programs.” Click “Cyberlink DVD,” then “YouCam.” Test the webcam in the viewer to see if you can see yourself in the preview window. Close the YouCam program windows after you determine whether the webcam works.

    Reset and Reinstall

    • 4

Click the “Start” button. In the search box, type “Device Manager” and press “Enter.”

    • 5

Double-click the “Imaging Devices” link in Device Manager. Highlight the “USB Camera J” or “USB Webcam” device name. Right-click the device name and click “Uninstall.” Wait a few seconds for Windows to uninstall the webcam driver and remove the device name from the list.

    • 6

      Restart the DV9620US laptop.

    • 7

Open Device Manager again. Click “Action” on the menu bar, then “Scan For Hardware Changes.” Windows redetects the webcam and reinstalls the driver.

    • 8

Open YouCam on your laptop and test the webcam again. You should be able to see yourself in the preview window after resetting the driver.

Tips & Warnings

  • If updating the webcam firmware driver does not enable the device on your laptop, there is probably something wrong with the device physically. To repair a defective webcam in a laptop requires that you disassemble the LCD screen assembly; you should not attempt it unless you are very familiar with laptop micro-component repair and replacement.
