How to Keep My Carpet Runner From Bunching Up

A carpet runner helps protect your carpet from soiling and damage, but it can also create annoyances, like bunching. If your carpet runner is bunching up, it’s usually due to walking on it often. As you shuffle your feet along the runner each day, it causes the middle and ends to move and push forward. You can stop this from happening by simply securing the runner at the edges. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the first edge of the carpet runner. Apply a strip of clear double-sided tape, about 5 inches long, to that edge and then press it down into the carpet or hard floor. Repeat that for all other edges -- make sure that the runner is taut and straight before pressing down on the other side.

Add a few more pieces of the double-sided tape to the inside edges of the runner to secure it even more. Place the tape pieces about a foot apart along the length of the runner.

    • 3

Place a heavy book or weight on top of each edge where you’ve placed double-sided tape to help keep it in place. Remove the weights after a day -- the tape should then keep the runner in place and stop it from bunching with regular use. Replace the double-sided tape as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're planning to apply the double-sided tape to a hard floor, read the package of the tape to ensure that it is safe for application. Some stores sell "no damage" double-sided mounting tape.
