How to Format a Pamphlet in InDesign

Using Adobe InDesign you can create your own pamphlets and print them on your own computer. Most pamphlets are designed to be folded, often in three sections, and can be printed on ordinary letter-sized paper. Use the new page setup options to define your margins and columns to ensure the pamphlet sections are uniform in size and position. Use images and lots of space to make the pamphlet inviting to the eye. Don't try to fill space with unnecessary words.

Instructions

  1. Page Layout

    • 1

Launch InDesign and open the new document window by pressing “Ctrl-N” on the keyboard.

    • 2

Type “2” in the “Number of Pages” field to create a double-sided pamphlet. Deselect “Facing Pages” if it is checked.

    • 3

Select “Letter” as the “Page Size.” Click the “Landscape” icon in the “Orientation” section.

    • 4

Set the columns for the pamphlet by typing “3” in the “Number” field. Type “2.5 in” or “1p6” in the “Gutter” field to put some space between columns. Set the margins as “3p” or “.5 in” each.

    • 5

Click “OK.” Note that two pages are displayed, each with three columns. Space between the columns leaves room to fold the pamphlet.

    Adding Text

    • 6

Click the first page in the main window. Select the “Type Tool” in the Toolbox. Drag the tool across the page to create a text box, staying within the columns. Type or paste the content into the text box.

    • 7

Format the size, color and font style using the Options bar.

    • 8

Move the text box as needed by clicking the “Selection Tool” in the Toolbox. Click anywhere on the text box and hold the mouse button to drag the box. Click the corner of the text box to resize it.

    Adding Graphics

Click the “Selection Tool” in the Toolbox, then click the “File” menu and select “Place” to add images to the pamphlet. Select the image from the navigation window and click “Open.”

    • 10

Click the pamphlet in the place where you want the image to appear. Resize the image by clicking the corner and dragging it. To constrain the proportions, hold down the “Shift” key while you resize the image.

    • 11

Add swatches of color to the pamphlet by selecting the “Rectangle Tool” from the Toolbox. Click the “Foreground Color” icon in the Toolbox and select a color from the Color palette. Drag the the tool across the pamphlet where you want the box of color to appear.

    Finalizing the Pamphlet

    • 12

Move any object behind or above other objects, such as moving a text box so it is above an image by clicking the “Object” menu and selecting “Arrange.” You can then move the object forward or backward as needed.

    • 13

Print the pamphlet to your own printer by selecting “Print” from the “File” menu.

    • 14

Save a copy of the pamphlet to send as an email attachment or make available online by clicking the “File” menu and selecting “Export.” You can then name the pamphlet and save it as an “.pdf” file.
