How to Make a Wooden Coaster
Wooden coasters are sturdy and practical. They protect your tables and surfaces better than thin fabric or flimsy cardboard coasters, and they also provide a level surface for your drink. Depending on your decorating style, wood coasters may also be more suited to your motif. Show off your creative side and make your own wooden coasters from a dry tree limb. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a dry tree limb, such as cedar or pine, that is approximately 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Alternatively, use a slab of wood of comparable size. Note: the wood slab may be round or circular, depending on your preferences.
-
2
Place the limb or wood on a work table. Hold it down with one hand and use a miter saw in the other hand to cut the limb or wood into small disks. Disks should be approximately 1/2 inch in width.

-
3
Sand the tops and bottoms of each disk to remove bumps and blemishes caused by the saw.
-
4
Paint a stain on one side of the disk (whichever side you want to face up). Once dry, paint a sealer or finish on the same side to protect the coaster from stains and spills.
-
5
Place the disk on a piece of felt and trace the outline with fabric chalk. Cut the felt out, cutting inside the outline. Glue it onto the bottom of the disk.

Tips & Warnings
If you do not have access to a tree branch or limb, purchase local firewood. Firewood is appropriate in size for the project and still has a rustic and unfinished appearance.
