How to Make a Goth Friendship Bracelet

Jewelry is an important part of Goth styling.

Goth styling isn’t just for social sub-cultures anymore. Many mainstream celebrities and average people sport Goth clothing, jewelry and accessories. While black is still the predominant Goth color, many adherents accent with white, cream or even bright neon colors. The term “Goth” comes from the term “Visigoth.” It was used to describe Renaissance artists and architects who stepped outside the trend, adding gargoyles, demons and other fantasy images. The work was considered ugly by classical standards. Today, Goth styling borrows these counter-culture images as a form of self-expression.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut five 3-foot lengths of embroidery floss. Line them up together on the work surface.
Make a loop on the ends of the five pieces of floss. Push the end through the loop and make a knot.

    • 2

Open the safety in and push the pin through the knot. Pin the knot to a piece of cloth furniture, a pillow or even the knee of your pants.

    • 3

Pick up the left-hand string. Place it over the next string, then wrap the first string under the second. Push the end of the first string through the loop created between the first and second string. Holding the bottom of the second string, pull the first string to tighten the knot. Repeat for the next three strings. At the end of the row, the first string is to the right of all the other strings. What had been the second string, is now the first string. Start a new row and repeat until the bracelet measures one inch.

    • 4

Thread the first string through a charm before tying it around the second string. Continue to repeat the process until you have tied another inch of the bracelet and add another charm.

    • 5

Continue to repeat rows and add charms until the bracelet is 7 inches long. Bring all the strings together and tie into a knot to finish the bracelet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try making this bracelet out of all black embroidery floss, or make the bracelet predominantly black with a single red thread.

  • Use charms that express Goth sentiments such as gargoyles, angels, demons and ravens.

  • Do not attach the safety pin to leather or vinyl clothing or furniture.
