Sew a basic fabric pocket to the inside of your sweater.

If you need a safe place to put your keys or other small items but you don't want to change the look of your sweater, you can attach a hidden pocket. Hidden pockets are attached to the inside of the garment, so these are most convenient on cardigan sweaters, where you can open up the front for easy access. You don't even need to learn how to knit, as you can sew a basic fabric pocket to the knitting of the sweater.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a four-inch square out of a piece of cotton fabric. Make sure the cotton is preshrunk, so that when you wash the sweater, the pocket won't shrink and make the outside of the sweater pucker.

    • 2

Fold over one-quarter inch of the edges on three sides of the fabric square and one-half inch on one of the sides, and pin them down. Iron the folded edges on an ironing board or a towel to get a neat, crisp edge. Allow the edges to cool for 10 minutes.

    • 3

Turn your sweater inside out and put the pocket on the inside of the front panel where you want it. Slip pins through the fabric and the knitting to hold the pocket as you work.

    • 4

Thread a sewing needle with thread in the same color as the yarn that makes up the knit of the sweater. Bring the needle and thread down through the fabric and the middle of the yarn directly under the upper left corner of the pocket.

    • 5

Run the needle and thread over down through the yarn and back up through the fabric directly next to where you started. Repeat this in the same spot six or seven times to secure the series of stitches.

    • 6

Bring the needle and thread up through the fabric, one-sixteenth of an inch away from where you started, heading toward the bottom of the pocket. You are making a line of small "running stitches." Repeat this stitch every one-sixteenth of an inch down and around the edge of the pocket until you get to the upper-right corner. Secure the end of the stitches and trim the excess thread.

    • 7

Remove the pins from the pocket and the sweater and turn it right-side out.
