1
Wash your hair with conditioner before you apply the dye. Don’t wash your hair with shampoo. The natural oil in your hair is needed and shampoo will wash it away.
-
2
Dip your finger into a jar of petroleum jelly. Rub your finger along your hair line, applying a thin coat of petroleum jelly. Your hair line is where your hair and skin meet. The petroleum jelly prevents the dye from staining your skin.

3
Spray a mist of water onto the ends of your hair.
-
4
Part your hair down the middle with a comb. Part your hair again from ear to ear to separate your hair into four sections. Dye one section at a time. Secure each section of hair with a hair clip. Before you apply the dye to a section, remove the hair clip.
-
5
Wrap a towel around your neck. The towel prevents the dye from getting on your skin and clothes.
-
6
Put on the rubber gloves included with the hair dye kit.
-
7
Mix the hair dye with the activator per the manufacturer’s instructions. There is an empty bottle included with the kit for mixing. Shake the bottle to combine the dye and activator.
-
8
Wet your hair if the instructions on the box recommend it. Some dye kits require you to wet your hair while others do not.
-
9
Squeeze a small amount of dye into the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together to evenly coat the gloves with dye.
-
10
Rub one section of your hair with the dye until your hair is thoroughly coated. Repeat this process until all four sections of your hair are coated in dye.
-
11
Leave the dye in your hair for the time indicated on the dye kit. Depending on the brand and type of dye kit you use, this time may be between 10 and 20 minutes.
-
12
Rinse your hair under warm running water until the water runs clear. You should see no excess dye.
-
13
Rub the supplied conditioner into your hair. Leave it sit for two to three minutes.
-
14
Rinse your hair under warm running water. Air dry your hair when finished.

Tips & Warnings
There are many shades of black hair. Choose a hair dye kit that matches the shade of black of your eyebrows. An image of the resulting color is often pictured on the front of the box.
Don’t shampoo your hair for three days after you dye your hair or it may interfere with the process of the color setting into your hair.
Some people are allergic to the chemicals in hair dye. Test the hair dye on a small patch of hair one day before you dye your entire head of hair to make sure you are not allergic.
