Instructions

    • 1

Put on latex gloves to protect your hands from the chemicals. Use a non-metallic bowl and a non-metallic spoon or stirrer to prevent metals from interfering with the chemicals in the mixture.

    • 2

Pour in the bowl a color solution that is no more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural color, because it is difficult to determine whether peroxide has dyed the hair to the right degree. Add the developer, which is the solution containing peroxide, to the solution. Use only as much solution and developer as the bottles indicate for your hair length; adjusting quantities will upset the chemical balance of the solution.

    • 3

Slowly mix the developer into the solution. Stir until the mixture is fully blended and the solution changes color, signaling that the peroxide has been absorbed by the solution. As you stir, wipe the sides and bottom of the bowl to prevent unmixed residue from collecting.

    • 4

Add green, blue or violet toner to the solution, if your hair is prone to rust or redden. Cool tints will counteract red, rust and orange pigment in the hair. Fully mix the toner into the solution immediately before applying the solution to the hair.
