How to Make Balloon Ants

How to Make Balloon Ants thumbnail
Balloon animal bending is an intricate art.

Making balloon animals requires carefully twisting long, narrow balloons into specific shapes. Creating complex balloon ants is possible. However, it's also possible to create a balloon ant without so many intricate twists and bends. Make your balloon ant using one balloon as well as some pipe cleaners and craft eyes. Bend them for parties or for decoration purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Blow up one of your balloons until it extends to its full length and is firm. Avoid adding too much air or it will burst. Tie the end off.

    • 2

Bring your hands 1/3 of the way down from the tied end. Hold one hand on each side of the balloon and lightly pinch down with your fingers. Quickly twist the balloon down until you have created a separated segment of balloon.

    • 3

Tie a pipe cleaner around the twisted balloon section. Wrap it around several times to keep it tight. Cut off the ends so that the pipe cleaners are about 5 inches a piece.

    • 4

Wrap two more pipe cleaners in this way around the same area to create ant legs. Spread the ends of the pipe cleaners out to spread out the ant's legs.

    • 5

Place your hands another 1/3 of the way down the balloon and make another quick twist. Tie this one with three pipe cleaner legs in the same way. You should now have a three-segment ant with six pipe cleaner legs.

    • 6

Cut two pipe cleaners to about 3 inches long. Tape these vertically to the top of one of your end balloons to create your antennae. Add your craft eyes to the front of the balloon to finish your ant's face.
