How to Make a Paper Chef's Hat for Young Kids
If you are making a dress-up costume or you want to interest your child in cooking, you can construct a basic chef’s hat from paper. The traditional head covering of the chef has been around for a long time and is designed to absorb sweat and keep hair away from food. Although it is usually white, you can make a paper chef’s hat in any color desired.

1
Measure around the child’s head and add two inches. Cut a strip of construction paper that is this length and is 4 inches wide.
-
2
Glue the two ends of this piece of paper together so there is a 2-inch overlap. Tuck the loose end inside the other end to hide the join. This is the brim of hat.

3
Cut out a large circle of tissue paper. It should be three times as wide as the diameter of the brim. This does not need to be an accurate circle.
-
4
Apply a layer of glue to the inside of the hat brim. This layer should cover about an inch below the top edge of the brim.
-
5
Insert the tissue paper circle inside the brim and attach the edges to the glue layer.
-
6
Push out the rest of the tissue paper so that it balloons above the rim. Loosely fold the tissue paper accordion style so the hat stands up in the pleated pattern of a chef’s hat.
-
7
Apply more glue between the edges of the tissue paper and the brim of the hat so that it is secure. Leave it to dry for several hours before wearing.
