How to Make a Lace Hemp Stitch

Hemp stitching is used to make jewelry pieces from the natural product such as bracelets or necklaces. The cobra stitch is a lacing stitch that is commonly used by hemp braiders because the thin braid created is ideal for flat-lying jewelry. Creating your own hemp bracelet using the lacing stitch is a simple way to get used to making hemp jewelry, as the braid requires only a single repeated stitch along the length of the bracelet.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two lengths of cord, each six times longer than your desired bracelet length.

    • 2

Hold the two cords together; then fold the cords over on-sixth of the way along the length of the cords so the short end of each cord hangs down in the middle, with one long end on either side of the two short ends.

    • 3

Tie a knot with all four loose ends, creating a 1/2-inch loop between the fold in the cords and the knot.

    • 4

Wrap a piece of tape around one long end of cord. This will be used simply to differentiate between the two ends, so any tape works.

    • 5

Cross the taped end in front of the two short ends of cord.

    • 6

Lay the nontaped end over the section of the taped end which crossed center.

    • 7

Pass the nontaped end behind the center cords and over the section of the taped end which didn't cross center. Pull the two long ends apart to tighten one stitch.

    • 8

Repeat the stitch, always passing the taped end in front, until the braid is long enough to wrap around the wearer's wrist.

    • 9

Hold all four loose ends together; then tie a double knot with the ends.

    • 10

Wear the bracelet by wrapping it around your wrist and slipping the loop over the knot to secure it in place.
