How to Make Baby Leg Warmers Out of Knee-High Socks

Leg warmers are intended for exactly what their name indicates: to keep legs warm. They serve double duty for babies as leg warmers and knee savers because they cushion knees of crawling babies. Baby leg warmers can be made inexpensively and quickly from children's knee-high socks. Homemade baby leg warmers are practical gifts and accessories for any outfit.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one pair of childrens' knee-high socks flat on a work table. Cut along each sock's ankle line, removing the foot section of each sock. Set aside the leg sections.

    • 2

Cut off the toe part of each sock's foot section, and discard the toe portion. Cut a 2-inch wide section of fabric from each remaining foot section.

    • 3

Place a mark 1/2 inch from one end of a 3/4-inch wide elastic band. Wrap the elastic band around the ankle of the baby who will wear the leg warmers. Make the elastic firm but not tight around the ankle. Make a mark at the point where the wrapped elastic meets the mark you made earlier. Cut the elastic band 1/2 inch beyond the second mark. Repeat the procedure to mark and cut a second elastic band.

    • 4

Place one of the elastic bands one of the two pieces of 2-inch wide fabric you cut from the foot sections. Fold the 2-inch wide fabric in half to create a casing for the elastic band. Hold the fold in place, and remove the elastic band. Pin the fabric to maintain its fold. Repeat the procedure for the second elastic band and second piece of 2-inch fabric.

    • 5

Sew one elastic band's casing to one sock's leg section with cotton thread, but leave a 1-inch hole at the casing's ends for the elastic band. Attach a safety pin to the end of the elastic band, and pull it through the holes. Join the elastic band's ends, and sew them together. Sew to close the casing's 1-inch holes. Attach the second elastic band's casing to the second sock's leg section in the same way, and add the elastic band in the same manner.
