Hippie headbands have made a comeback.

Hippie headbands are back in fashion. Luckily for crochet aficionados, hippie headbands are easy to make as long as you understand the basic crochet stitches. Make multiple headbands in styles and colors to match each outfit. Crocheting allows you to make yours as long or short as you want and tie them at the back of your head. Crochet them with multicolored wool or add beads for that extra hippie touch.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Make a shell. In row 1, chain stitch four, double crochet into the first chain (the beginning of chain 3 counts as a double crochet here and throughout the pattern), make two double chains, chain two, then make three double chains in the same chain. This will make one shell.

    • 2

Continue to row 2. Chain three, turn, make a shell in the second chain space, double chain into the last double chain to make two double chains and one shell. Repeat row 2 for three to 70 rows, depending upon the length you desire. Finish off the headband and weave in the ends.

    • 3

Create a dual-color headband. With the first color, make a chain the length you want for the headband, using a multiple of four chains plus three. In row 1, double chain into the third chain from the hook, and in each chain across. Turn.

    • 4

Switch to the second color wool. Chain four, skip three double chains, single chain into the next double chain. Chain three, skip three double chains, then single chain into the next double chain. Repeat chaining three, skipping three double chains, then single chaining into the next double chain across. Turn.

    • 5

Change back to the first color. Chain three (this counts as one double chain), make three double chains in the first triple chain space. Make four double chains in the next triple chain space and repeat across. Fasten off.

    • 6

Crochet the edging. Join the second color in any corner of the headband with a slip stitch, using the crochet hook and work in single chain around the entire edge of the headband. Join with a slip stitch in the first single chain. Fasten off.
