Headbands make great additions to play time.

Children love to play dress-up and love to make crafts. One essential piece for a variety of costumes is the headband. A simple headband can be decorated to fit a variety of themes, like Native American princess, soldier or cross-country runner. It can even be used as decoration for team sports. Children can craft and decorate their own headbands using some leftover recycled card stock and a little bit of yarn.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the card stock into strips about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long.

    • 2

Cut some felt material to the same dimensions as the card stock strips.

    • 3

Apply a layer of glue to one side of each strip of card stock. The glue should be spread evenly across the entire surface of the strip.

    • 4

Lay the strip of felt onto the glue and press down until the glue holds. Wipe away any excess glue that squeezed out the sides of the strip. The felt will be the back of the headband and absorb sweat when running around in costume.

    • 5

Turn the headband over and decorate it in whatever theme you wish using crayons, markers, glitter or stickers.

    • 6

Take a metal single-hole punch and punch a hole in each end of the headband.

    • 7

Cut two bits of yarn from the spool, 3 to 5 inches long, for every headband you're making. Thread a length of yarn through each hole and tie it off. You should now have a string dangling from each end of the headband.

Wrap the headband around your head, with the felt side touching your forehead, and secure it tightly with the yarn ties.
