How to Cut Even Sashing Strips for a Quilt
Adding sashing between quilting blocks gives a quilt a final touch and added detail. The sashing of a quilt involves strips of fabric that are placed along the edges of a quilt and around each quilting block. Each strip must be cut evenly and in a straight manner to give the quilt the correct effect. With the correct method, cutting strips for a quilt sashing can be an easy project

1
Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, being sure to match the selvedge together. Lay the folded fabric on the cutting mat. Align the folded edge along the straight edge of the cutting mat.
-
2
Trim the edge of the right side of the fabric to make sure it is straight. Cut along a ruler to ensure the edge will be straight.

3
Measure the folded edge of the piece of fabric. At 55 inches, make a cut. Refold the material, matching cut edge to cut edge. Align the folded edge along the straight edge of the cutting mat. Measure the open edge of the fabric, making a mark at 1 1/2 inch increments. Cut 22 strips 1 1/2 inches wide from the fabric.

4
Place one of the strips on the cutting mat horizontally. Measure to the 5 1/2-inch mark and cut. Continue cutting the strip to create 1 1/2 inch by 5 1/2 inch strips. Cut ten strips in this manner. Trim the remaining 12 strips so they measure 1 1/2 inches by 53 inches.
