Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the height and width of the wall using measuring tape. Multiply the height measurement by the width measurement to find the square footage of the wall. This will tell you how much fabric you need to cover the wall.

    • 2

Choose the fabric you wish to decorate the wall with. According to Rental Decorating Digest, lightweight fabrics such as cotton, gingham and chintz are easiest to work with. Choose a color that appeals to you. Purchase enough fabric to cover the entire square footage of the wall.

    • 3

Clean the wall using a rag to remove any dirt or dust particles. This will ensure that the fabric adheres properly to the wall.

    • 4

Pour fabric starch into a paint pan. Use a sponge to apply fabric starch to the top half of the wall.

    • 5

Smooth the fabric across the top half of the wall. Use thumb tacks to hold the fabric in place until the fabric starch dries. Make sure the fabric lines up with the edges of the wall properly and that the fabric is completely flat to the wall with no creases.

Apply fabric starch to the bottom half of the wall using the sponge. Smooth the fabric against the wall and use thumb tacks to hold the fabric in place. Make sure the fabric lines up with the edges of the wall properly and that the fabric is completely flat to the wall with no creases. Allow the fabric starch to dry completely and then remove the thumb tacks. The fabric should be stuck to the wall much like wallpaper with no creases or bubbles.

Screw wall hooks through the fabric into the drywall along the top of the wall. The closer together you place the hooks, the tighter the twinkle lights will hang. Likewise, the farther apart you place the hooks, the looser the twinkle lights will hang and the more they will drape. Hang the twinkle lights across the hooks and plug them in so that they are illuminated. If you are unhappy with the results, unscrew the hooks and adjust them until you are satisfied with the finished look.

Tips & Warnings

  • To remove the fabric from the wall, you simply need to pull it off of the wall. If removing the fabric is difficult, run a damp sponge across the fabric to loosen it before pulling.
