How to Make Grungy Textures for Scrapbook Papers

Create memories with family and friends.

Grungy scrapbook papers have a vintage appeal that works well with historical, family or old-fashioned layouts. Cardstock comes in grungy designs, but you can do the work yourself by transforming plain white paper into pages that look worn and tattered, but still stylish. Use your imagination and tools around your house to create the look you want and save money as well, since many specialty papers carry a higher price tag. You can use your grungy textured paper as the background page or use die cuts to cut out shapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Crumble up one piece of cardstock, flatten it out and then repeat until the paper has a worn look. Crumbling up the paper creates the grungy texture.

    • 2

Brew a hot pot of coffee, enjoy a cup, but make sure you still have at least one cup of coffee to use for crafting. Allow the remaining coffee to cool before using.

    • 3

Place the cardstock over a large bowl and pour the cold coffee on top of the entire page. Repeat this step with more pages if you want more than one grungy-looking page. Allow the coffee-stained pages to fully dry for a day.

    • 4

Paint the dried page with a thin layer of Tim Holtz distress stain. You can use all sorts of colors of distress stain to create the vintage look you want. These stains come in brown, green, teal, amber and even pink. Allow the paint to dry and then use your papers for crafting.
