Allow the clay to harden completely before painting. Depending on the type of homemade clay, this could take anywhere from one hour to several days.

Wipe off the clay with a damp cloth to remove any dust, debris or grime that will prevent the paint from effectively adhering. Set the homemade clay creation onto a piece of newspaper or paper towel and gather together the needed supplies, including paintbrushes, paper towel and water cups for cleaning the brushes.

    • 3

Cover the clay with a layer of acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before examining it and applying a second coat to create a darker shade.

Create a design on the homemade clay; work with a pencil or paint on the piece, freehand. Cover the pencil marks with the acrylic paint and allow the paint to set for at least 12 hours before continuing.

    • 5

Cover the homemade clay pot creation with two to three thin coats of spray acrylic sealant. Use smooth, back and forth motions to cover the pot with the clear sealant. Allow the sealant to dry for eight hours, or overnight.
