How to Airbrush a Large Backdrop

How to Airbrush a Large Backdrop thumbnail
Airbrushing a large backdrop can be done relatively quickly.

Airbrushing is much more effective than any other kind of painting when it comes to large backdrops. You can cover a huge area using a small amount of paint; an airbrush also provides more precision and uniformity than does a traditional brush. Airbrushing a large backdrop can be difficult because of the scale of the work, but if you pick the correct nozzle and paint in a set pattern, the process will go quickly and come out evenly. The best way to airbrush a large backdrop is to start from the top and work downward.

Things You'll Need

  • Double-action airbrush
  • Compressor or CO2 tank
  • Large sheet or canvas

Instructions

    • 1

Hang up your backdrop. This way, you won't have to walk on it to reach the entire space. If the backdrop is higher than you can reach, bring a stool or stepladder into your work area.

    • 2

Affix the largest airbrush tip possible to the airbrush. A large tip will help cover a greater area.

    • 3

Set the air pressure in the compressor to be similar to the air pressure you will want from your airbrush. The more air pressure there is, the more paint will come out and the more opaque the final product.

    • 4

Apply paint at the top of the backdrop first. Work your way downward with horizontal lines. Keep the airbrush the same distance from the backdrop at all times to avoid uneven application of paint. If the paint comes out thick, dilute it with a little water to making spraying easier.

    • 5

Allow the background to dry thoroughly. If you are planning to paint images or designs on the large backdrop, sketch them out beforehand with a pencil or a piece of chalk. Step back from your work often to make sure you are creating the correct proportions. You may need to exaggerate light and shading if the backdrop will be seen from a distance.
