Instructions

Choose a color scheme. Go bright and bold with bright pink and silver with black accents. Create a feminine, springtime vibe with yellow and lilac with white accents. Be inspired by nature with soft browns and greens, or create a sophisticated effect with grays, pinks and lilacs.

Split three walls into lower and upper sections at chair-rail height. Leave the wall where the bed is positioned plain for now.

    • 3

Paint the lower half of the walls with a striped paint effect. In a gray and lilac room for example, paint a base coat of gray latex paint with an eggshell finish and allow to dry. Apply masking tape to the dry base coat and apply a latex eggshell finish paint in lilac to create stripes.

Paint the top half of the walls with a sponge painting technique. Apply a base coat of gray latex satin paint and allow to dry thoroughly. Use a brush to apply lilac latex satin paint to a natural sponge and dab the sponge over the base coat.

Apply two lines of masking tape horizontally along the wall where the two paint effects meet, approximately 6 inches apart. Paint the area in between the two lines of masking tape, using a slightly darker shade of lilac, to create a border.

Paint the wall where the bed is positioned with a faux marble finish for a luxurious and elegant effect. Apply a base coat in light gray latex satin paint. Allow to dry. Select two lilacs in similar but not identical shades. Mix one part lilac satin with one part untinted glaze and one part water. Create the same mixture again with the other lilac shade, leaving you with two glazes in slightly different shades of lilac. Apply the first glaze to the wall in a squiggly line. Repeat with the second glaze. Use a cloth to rub the edges of these lines, blending them into the base coat. Apply a very light gray to the walls with an artist's brush in a random pattern to create veins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a headboard mural or a crown canopy to the bed to complete the luxurious effect of the marble faux finish.
