Whether you are attending a fancy event or running errands around town, a low bun is a chic hairstyle. Most women will wear a messy bun during the day while out and about running errands, and then sleek it back for a more sophisticated style for a night updo. Instructions

    • 1

Wash hair with shampoo and conditioner tailored to your hair type. Blot, or squeeze, hair damp with a towel to remove moisture. Avoid rubbing hair to remove water because this may cause hair to split or break. Comb through hair to remove any tangles.

    • 2

Squeeze a quarter-size amount of styling gel into your hair. Work the gel into the hair starting at the tips and moving upward toward the roots. Comb through the hair to distribute the gel evenly.

    • 3

Comb hair to one side of your head and secure in a ponytail under the ear. Typically, the bun will go on the opposite side of where you part your hair. For instance, if you part your hair on the left, then the bun will go just under the right ear.

    • 4

Smooth out the top of the hair and the back of the head for a sleek style. Comb bangs to the side and secure with a bobby pin or hair clip if they are not long enough to reach the ponytail.

    • 5

Pull the ponytail straight forward. Begin twisting the ponytail in a clockwise direction until it gets tight enough to coil downward. As you twist, roll it down around the ponytail holder into a bun. Secure the bun around the ponytail holder with bobby pins. Tuck in any loose strands with your fingertips or secure with additional bobby pins.

    • 6

Spray the bun with a light mist of hairspray to secure the look. Use the comb to smooth any areas around the head, or pin hair to your head with bobby pins. Spray a shine serum around the head to give the hair a sleek appearance and to smooth any fly-aways.

    • 7

Create a messy bun by inserting the long end of a comb into the hair at the crown of your head and bang section. Pull the comb slightly upward to loosen the hair, but not out of the bun. Run your hand over the head to gently frizz the hair upward. Spray with a light mist of hairspray to secure the look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pull wisps of hair around the face to soften the look of a sleek side bun.

  • Insert two or three headbands into your hair when wearing a messy bun for a casual look.

  • Carry a small bottle of hairspray with you to tame hair when out and about.
