How to Keep Cardboard From Curling
While people know that cardboard is used for packing and storing, many don’t know that it is also used in art projects, such as for dollhouses, model theaters or photographic framing. Because of the small thickness of the cardboard and the paper material that makes it up, pieces may begin to curl or warp when exposed to humidity. Curling ruins the visual effect of your art, and can waste valuable time and effort. To prevent curling, take care of your cardboard and prepare it properly before using it for your creations.
Instructions
-
Storing Cardboard
-
1
Press cardboard flat between two pieces of treated, water-resistant plywood, such as that used for art easels. Use plywood boards that extend past the length of the cardboard.
-
2
Gently tie the plywood boards together, using string, to trap the cardboard between the two boards.
-
-
3
Store in a room with low humidity. You can control the humidity in a room using dehumidifiers. Place it as far away from bathrooms and kitchens as possible.
Preparing Cardboard for Use
-
4
Lay your cardboard flat on your work surface, so that the colored or printed display side faces down.
-
5
Mist the back of the cardboard with spray adhesive.
-
6
Press a piece of thick paper or poster board against the back of the cardboard, and press gently for one minute. Kannik’s Korner suggests using a paper with a similar weight to your cardboard.
-
7
Cut, with your craft knife, any excess paper from around your cardboard.

Tips & Warnings
Purchasing the right cardboard art boards may prevent future curling. Look for art boards without a chipboard center; instead, look for a pressed solid sheet.
When working with spray adhesive, work in a well-ventilated area, wearing protection over the nose, mouth and eyes.
