Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of fusing glass three-eighths of an inch square from a larger sheet of fusing glass, using a glass cutter. The fusing glass is the background color of the earring.

    • 2

Cut out two pieces of dichroic glass, one-fourth inch square, from a larger piece of dichroic glass, using the glass cutter. Dichroic glass contains metal oxides that provide luster and make the glass appear to change colors when looked at from different angles. The dichroic glass will be the main color component of the earring.

    • 3

Clean all cut glass pieces with glass cleaner, to remove any oils that could affect the fusing process. Wipe with a clean rag.

    • 4

Place the fusing glass onto the kiln shelf and then stack the dichroic glass on top of the fusing glass.

    • 5

Add a clear glass cap around the edges of the dichroic glass. The clear glass should overhand all the fusing glass edges slightly. The glass cap will melt clear around the fusing cap, covering any rough edges.

    • 6

Insert the kiln shelf into the kiln and fuse the glass at 1,450 degrees for 15 minutes. Because these glass pieces are small, they take only a few minutes to fuse. Turn the kiln off after this time, and vent it to help the kiln cool quickly.

    • 7

Allow the fused glass to return to room temperature without disturbing the piece. During this annealing process, the chemical processes are setting and finalizing the fusion of the pieces of glass.

    • 8

Roughen the back of the earrings with sandpaper.

    • 9

Attach the posts to the back of the earring with epoxy glue.
