A DIY Hairpin Lace Frame
Hairpin lace is a type of crocheting that is done on a special hairpin lace loom that comes apart easily so the completed hairpin lace can be removed. Manufactured hairpin lace looms have three sets of holes in the top and bottom loom sections. These holes are spaced evenly apart for three different widths of hairpin lace. Make a loom at home from a 1/2-inch dowel and a thin knitting needle, such as a No. 4 or No. 5.

1
Secure a 4 1/2-inch long, 1/2-inch dowel in a bench vise so it is on a horizontal axis. Position the dowel so the top is flush with the top plate on the bench vise.
-
2
Measure and place a mark at 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, 3, 3 1/2 and 4 inches.
-
-
3
Select a drill bit the same diameter as the knitting needle. Any thin knitting needle will work as long as it is smaller than 1/4 inch in diameter.
-
4
Drill a hole through the dowel at each of the designated marks. Remove the dowel from the bench vise and repeat Steps 1 through 4 on the second dowel.
-
5
Insert a double-ended knitting needle through the holes drilled at the 1/2-inch mark on the two dowels. Slide the dowels on the knitting needles approximately 1 inch.
-
6
Secure the knitting needle to the dowels with a rubber band on each end. Wrap the rubber band around the top and bottom of the joint between the knitting needle and the dowel. Wrap from the top of the needle then around the dowel, making an X over the dowel to hold in place. Repeat Steps 5 and 6, placing the remaining knitting needle in the two holes drilled at the 4-inch mark.
